Fairchild introduces the industry's first medium voltage MOSFETs in an 8×8 Dual Cool package
Fairchild, the world's leading provider of high-performance power semiconductor solutions, has introduced its industry-leading medium voltage MOSFET product in an 8x8 Dual Cool package. The new Dual Cool 88 MOSFET provides power conversion engineers with an excellent replacement for the bulky D2-PAK package, reducing its size by half while providing higher power density and efficiency, and improving thermal performance through air flow simultaneously over the upper and lower surfaces of the package.

Manufacturers use Dual Cool 88 packages instead of D2-PAK packaged MOSFETs, which can improve the efficiency of DC motors and reduce costs. The Dual Cool 88 package's advantages over the D2-PAK offer greater efficiency, smaller size, thinner form factor, and a 93% weight reduction, making it ideal for weight-sensitive applications such as aircraft and aviation models.
Compared to the D2-PAK, the Dual Cool 88 also has faster switching performance, less EMI, as well as higher power density and lower parasitic losses. The reduction of parasitic loss is achieved by welding the source using strips instead of wires, ensuring a very high pulse current flow and a 63% reduction in source inductance compared to D2-PAK devices. In addition, Dual Cool 88 is easy to store, transport and handle as it is highly moisture resistant, while moisture can cause damaging stripping during storage. Its excellent MSL1 rating makes it resistant to moisture without the packaging protection required for D2-PAK packaged devices.
