Gm's global compact vehicle platform uses Microchip MOST50

     Microchip Technology has announced that General Motors (GM) has selected Microchip's MOST(Media Oriented Systems Transport) intelligent Network Interface controller (INIC). Manage automotive infotainment system network functions on its global compact vehicle platform, Models covered include the Chevy Cruze, Chevy Volt, Opel Astra, Buick Excelle and Buick Verano, among others. In addition to these GM compact models, the synchronous, flexible and cost-effective MOST networking technology is used across all GM vehicle brands in midsize, large, performance, crossover and SUV, truck, and luxury platforms.

     As the substantive standard for networked systems, MOST technology is used by 30 automotive manufacturing brands and more than 204 models worldwide. Models based on MOST technology are already being produced in markets around the world, including North America, Asia and Europe. The ability of MOST networks to support multiple data types simultaneously allows automakers to provide a flexible system and feature set for current and future automotive infotainment applications, while also helping to reduce harness weight to better meet environmental regulations.

     The Microchip MOST50 INIC device used by GM infotainment networks has an optimized electrical physical layer (ePHY), can use UTP(unshielded twisted pair) copper wire, and meets the stringent EMC standards of the automotive industry. MOST INics provide an industry-standard hardware interface to the processor and peripherals for efficient transmission of audio, video, packets, and control data, greatly simplifying module design. With the ultra-fast network startup feature of MOST Inics, end users can instantly access the in-vehicle infotainment system.
