Infineon introduces the OptiMOS 5 25V and 30V product families

Infineon Technologies AG has introduced the OptiMOS™ 5 25V and 30V product families, a new generation of power MOSFETs in standard discrete packages. At the same time, Infineon also released a new Power module called Power Block and an integrated power module DrMOS 5x5. Together with drives and digital controllers, Infineon offers complete system solutions for servers, computers, data communications and telecommunications equipment.

Driven by megtrends such as cloud computing, the Internet of Things and social media, the demand for data processing power in modern society is increasing day by day. This is accompanied by a significant increase in energy consumption, which in turn requires improved energy efficiency of power conversion systems. The newly launched OptiMOS 25V and 30V products have redefined the performance benchmark for solutions in the industry, providing approximately 1% more energy efficiency over the previous generation over the entire load range and more than 95% peak efficiency in a typical server power design. This performance improvement is due to a number of factors, such as a 50% reduction in switching loss (Qswitch) compared to the previous generation of OptiMOS technology. For example, for a 130W server CPU operating continuously throughout the year, the new OptiMOS 25V can save 26.3 degrees of electricity. According to a large computer room with an average of 50,000 servers, a total of 2.6 million KWH of electricity can be saved every year.

New packaging technology

In conjunction with the launch of the OptiMOS 25V and 30V product families, Infineon also introduced a new packaging technology that further saves on-board space. The Power Block product family and the integrated power module DrMOS 5x5 use this new packaging technology, and its low-side MOSFETs are welded with the source pole down (contrary to traditional), which greatly improves thermal performance and reduces thermal resistance by 50% compared to standard packages such as SuperSO8.

The Infineon Power Block is a leadless SMD package that integrates the low - and high-side MOSFEts of synchronous DC/DC converters into a package with a form factor of just 5.0x6.0 square millimeters. With Power Block, customers can replace two discrete devices in standard packages, such as SuperSO8 or SO-8, with one device. This makes it possible to reduce the size of the power supply design by up to 85%. The compact package form factor and optimized interconnect of the high-low MOSFETs in the package minimize loop inductance for optimal system performance.

The integrated power module DrMOS 5x5, which also uses OptiMOS 5 25V, integrates, drives, and two MOSFETs for a total board space of only 25 square millimeters. This integrated solution can greatly shorten the customer's product design cycle and reduce the design difficulty. In addition, this highly integrated power module has a high precision temperature detection of +/-5°C (compared to +/-10°C for external devices), which helps further improve system reliability and performance.
