Micron Technology introduces new flash memory designed for consumer applications

     Micron Technology, Inc. has announced the addition of a new member to its extensive portfolio of flash memory products - tailored solutions for extremely cost-conscious consumer applications seeking high performance and reliability. The new TLC NAND is based on a 16-nanometer (nm) process that provides the ideal balance of functionality for applications such as USB sticks and consumer SSDS. TLC demand is expected to be strong throughout 2015, accounting for almost half of all NAND storage.

     Micron's 16-nanometer process was named "Most Innovative Memory Device" and "Semiconductor Technology of the Year 2014" by TechInsights. As a mature and battle-proven storage technology, the 16nm process provides a solid foundation for a reliable TLC design. TLC, also known as a "triple-level cell," is a technology that stores three bits of data in each flash data unit, which can effectively reduce costs and reduce chip size.

     With this technology, customers can benefit from Micron's comprehensive design support team. They will act as trusted advisors to help clients through qualification testing and ensure optimal implementation of the final solution. Major flash memory customers and ecosystem partners around the world are already integrating this new NAND into their latest designs, ensuring rapid adoption of the technology in end applications.

     The new TLC product further complements and expands Micron's extensive flash portfolio. Spanning four generations of processes and multiple technologies, this portfolio provides centralized solutions for virtually every application known - from consumer electronics and mobile products to enterprise storage, embedded and automotive markets. The new 16GB TLC NAND is now in mass production and available. Micron has also begun offering samples to multiple partners, which will lead to a consumer SSD solution based on this technology coming to market this fall. Micron Technology is also expected to release its own TLC technology-based client SSD in the same period.
