A 60V dual-output synchronous step-down controller with an adjustable 5V to 10V gate drive draws only 29µA in standby mode

     Linear Technology Corporation introduced the LTC3892, a high-voltage dual-output synchronous step-down DC/DC controller that draws only 29µA of current when one output is active and 34µA when both outputs are activated. The 4.5V to 60V input voltage range is designed to protect against high-voltage transients, ensuring continuous operation when the car is cold started and suitable for a wide range of input power supplies and battery chemistry. Each output can be set in the 0.8V to 99% VIN range with efficiency up to 96% at output currents over 20A, making the device ideal for 12V or 24V automotive, heavy equipment, industrial control, robotics and telecommunications applications.

     The LTC3892 / LTC3892-1's adjustable 5V to 10V gate drivers allow the use of logic or standard level MOSFETs to maximize efficiency. The device operates at an optional fixed frequency of 50kHz to 900kHz and can be synchronized to an external clock of 75kHz to 850kHz. Under light loads, the user can choose between continuous operation, pulse jump and low ripple Burst Mode operation. The two-phase operation of the LTC3892 / LTC3892-1 reduces input filtering and capacitance requirements.

     Its current mode architecture provides very easy loop compensation, fast transient response, fixed frequency operation, excellent voltage regulation, and easy current sharing through parallel phases to achieve greater current. Output current detection can be done by measuring the voltage drop at both ends of the output inductor (DCR) for maximum efficiency, or by using an optional detection resistor for increased accuracy. Current reentry limits the heat dissipation of MOSFETs under overload conditions. Available in two versions, the LTC3892 is a full-featured device with two well-powered signals, adjustable current limits, and fixed 3.3V or 5V output voltage options.

     The LTC3892 is available in a 32-lead 5mm x 5mm QFN package and the LTC3892-1 is available in a 28-lead TSSOP package. Available in 4 temperature grade versions, the extended and industrial temperature grade versions operate in the temperature range from -40 °C to 125°C, the high temperature automotive temperature grade versions operate in the temperature range from -40 °C to 150°C, and the military temperature grade is guaranteed to operate in the temperature range from -55 °C to 150°C.
