Diodes introduces the BCR420U and BCR421U linear LED driver series
Diodes is expanding its popular series of BCR420U and BCR421U linear LED drivers in response to growing demand for small LED lighting devices with high efficiency and ultra-low EMI. The inclusion of BCR420UFD and BCR421UFD units in the ultra-low DFN2020 package is ideal for 12V and 24V LED edge lighting applications.
The main benefits of LED lighting are longer life and greater efficiency, which represents a continued increase in demand for more variable and less intrusive solutions, including fixtures that glow from the edge rather than vertically. In response to this demand, manufacturers are looking for solutions to support a thinner overall shape. The DFN2020 package is only 0.6mm high, making it the perfect choice for edge lighting.
The new unit, like the rest of the BCR4xxU series, offers adjustable current with ±10% tolerance between 10mA and 200mA (BCR420UFD) or 350mA (BCR421UFD); The BCR421UFD can use PWM signal control up to 25kHz and 1% load period to provide LED dimming function. Both devices have a negative temperature coefficient, which reduces the LED driver current when the internal temperature rises, thereby protecting and extending the LED life. In addition, the linear topology used is based on an NPN emitter coupled with an emitter resistor, representing a device with almost no EMI, making it ideal for sensitive applications such as medical lighting.
With a wide operating voltage range (between 1.4V and 40V) and a total power consumption of up to 1.7W, the device is suitable for driving longer LED strips while still providing sufficient protection against transients in 24V systems. The device is designed as an integrated solution that integrates transistors, diodes and resistors in a package of just 0.6mm in height. This thickness is much lower than the SOT26 package, allowing engineers, architects and lighting designers to develop LED devices with a lower overall profile for a wider range of applications. Edge lighting is currently designated for emergency, atmospheric or decorative lighting, but can also be used in medical, industrial and commercial environments.
