Microchip announces new GestIC controllers

     Microchip Technology's second member of the patented GestIC family of award-winning products has been introduced. The new MGC3030 3D Gesture controller has simplified user interface options focused on gesture detection, making it a real one-step step to add 3D gesture recognition design to consumer electronics and embedded devices. The MGC3030 comes in an easy-to-manufacture SSOP28 package that extends the sought-after 3D gesture control capabilities to cost-sensitive applications such as toys, audio and lighting that require high volume production.

     Microchip's freely downloadable AUREA Graphical user interface (GUI) and the MGC3030's easy-to-configure universal IO port, which requires no host MCU/ processor intervention, make integration of the MGC3030 gesture detection even easier. In addition, the MGC3030 has an on-chip 32-bit digital signal processor that processes gesture data in real time, eliminating the need for an external camera or controller for the host to process, which makes user interaction with the device faster and more natural.

     To further simplify the design process and speed time to market, the MGC3030 can take advantage of GestIC family development tools, such as Microchip's Colibri Gesture Suite. This on-chip software library has a complex yet easy-to-use gesture feature. Intuitive, natural human hand movements are recognized, making device operation practical, intuitive and fun. Users can perform multiple commands, including switching audio tracks, adjusting volume controls or backlighting, without touching the device with features such as flicking gestures, Hot Wheels gestures and proximity detection. All gesture processing takes place on-chip, enabling manufacturers to achieve powerful user interfaces with minimal development investment.

     Unique to GestIC technology, the programmable automatic wake up on approach function starts operating in a power consumption range of 100mW, enabling always-on gesture sensing in power-constrained applications. If the system detects real user interaction, it automatically switches to full sensing mode. Once the user leaves the sensing area, the system will return to automatic wake-up mode.
