Microchip introduces new dual channel USB port power controllers

     Microchip has expanded its portfolio of programmable USB port power controllers with the introduction of a new dual-channel UCS2112 device. The new port power controller supports two ports, each with eight programmable continuous current limits ranging from 0.53 to 3.0 amps, enabling faster charging at higher currents.

     To protect and improve overall system uptime, the new device also integrates current monitoring, high-precision current limiting, charge rationing, and dynamic temperature management. The UCS2112 helps designers cater to a wide range of host devices, such as laptops, tablets, monitors, docking stations and printers in automotive, computer, educational and aviation applications, as well as multi-port charging accessories and storage devices. The new device is flexible and can be operated independently or combined with a USB hub to create a complete charging and/or USB communication system.

     According to Rich Simoncic, Microchip's vice president of Analog Power and Interface Products, "USB charging now tends to support high-current charging, mainly due to the increasing battery capacity of larger phones and tablets." "Our new UCS2112 provides the safety features necessary for these solutions, while also incorporating current monitoring and temperature management to maximize system uptime and reliability."

     In order to provide a better end-user experience, the UCS2112's dynamic temperature management function reduces the current limit when the temperature approaches the limit, thereby preventing downtime and ensuring normal charging function when other devices are completely stopped. The UCS2112 integrates current monitoring, so no external sensing resistance is required. The "Additional detection" signal function is also provided, which does not depend on the main power supply, even when the host is shut down or hibernated. Current monitoring and rationing also help manage multiple charging devices at the same time, and can balance dynamic load current on low-power systems.
