Melexis has added the MLX92253 to its Hall-effect Dual Latch portfolio. This enables accurate speed and direction ECU calculations and easy transmission across multiple platforms. This integrated solution is a cost-effective choice for DC motors and encoders in many embedded applications, including automotive, alternative mobility, consumer and industrial.

     "The MLX92253 sets a new standard for affordable DC motors and encoders," said Minko Daskalov, Melexis product line Manager. "It reduces development, production and material costs while supporting a wide range of applications, contributing to global sustainability." The device is now available in a compact TSOT23 package. It is also available as an engineering sample on request in a VA package.

     In mobile applications, directional feedback combined with linear speed, rotational speed or angular position sensing is critical to the basic operation and safety of countless systems. This feedback is used in passenger cars to monitor and limit the operation of electric systems such as window lifters, seat motors, and electric taildoors. On an e-bike, it can detect rhythm and activate electric pedal assist. Motor feedback also plays a vital role in ensuring safe and precise movement in industrial, household, and applications such as smart blinds and ventilation systems.

     Engineers who use dual latch solutions in stepper or DC motor applications currently rely on integrating two discrete or pitch-related solutions. In either case, the design has been hampered by development, complex and highly specific magnet designs, and increased costs. The device features two Hall plates, one Z axis and one X axis, with two independent signal tracks. It also has a common magnetic center, which ensures a consistent 90° phase shift (orthogonal) between the two velocity outputs, independent of the magnetic pole spacing. In addition, it has a low and narrow magnetic threshold, allowing for smaller, more affordable magnets or a larger air gap to mitigate assembly problems. This capability gives engineers greater flexibility in magnetic design and makes it easier to reuse in a variety of products.

     The device provides fast and accurate feedback with low latency, low jitter and higher reliability compared to traditional solutions. The chopper frequency is 500kHz, the operating voltage range is 2.7V to 5.5V, suitable for low power embedded design, the operating temperature range is -40℃ to 150℃, and the output status feedback is started. The startup feedback feature converts two outputs into inputs at startup. This allows the MCU to retrieve the previous state of the device before powering it down, ensuring that no motion is missed.
