Renesas Electronics introduces the R9J02G012 controller - supporting device-to-device certification

Renesas Electronics announced the new R9J02G012 USB Power Delivery (USB PD) controller for a wide range of USB PD products using direct current (DC) power, including AC adapters, PCS, smartphones, and other consumer and office devices and toys. The R9J02G012 is the industry's first monolithic solution to support USB Power Delivery 3.0(USB PD 3.0) and USB Type-C™ certification 1.0 (Note 1) for device-to-device authentication.

Renesas Electronics announced the new R9J02G012 USB Power Delivery (USB PD) controller for a wide range of USB PD products using direct current (DC) power, including AC adapters, PCS, smartphones, and other consumer and office devices and toys. The R9J02G012 is the industry's first monolithic solution to support USB Power Delivery 3.0(USB PD 3.0) and USB Type-C™ certification 1.0 (Note 1) for device-to-device authentication.

As the demand for fast charging of mobile devices continues to grow, so does the demand for high-power DC power (such as 100W). Previously, system manufacturers often used USB Micro-B connectors to implement proprietary fast charging modes. However, as smartphone charging/battery accidents occur, it is critical to provide products with a security ecosystem and USB PD compatibility. The USB Implementers Forum(USB-IF), the industry's leading technology consortium, has standardized the following specifications to provide open, unified, and interoperable technology to meet market needs:

1. USB Type-C1.2 specifications: For easier and more convenient connection of cables, chargers and devices

2. USB Power Delivery 3.0 specifications: for higher power transmission protocols with added performance, security, and upgradability, such as PD firmware upgrades

3. USB Type-C Certification 1.0 specification: Applicable to device-to-device certification, allowing system manufacturers to implement additional charging strategies for reliable high-power charging via USB Type-C

As a long-time supporting member and board member of the USB Implementers Forum, Renesas has adopted all three standards. The new R9J02G012 is a flexible, small package USB PD controller for USB Type-C port control for all USB PD devices. All USB PD device connection ports with the R9J02G012 can be electronically authenticated and tested for authenticity according to the certificate and Public Key infrastructure (PKI) defined by the USB Type-C authentication specification. This mechanism allows system manufacturers to detect the authenticity of connected PD devices (such as cables and chargers) before performing high-power charging (such as 20V/3A).

Main features of R9J02G012:

(1) Support for the new USB PD 3.0 standard and USB Type-C 1.0 standard for device-to-device authentication

R9J02G012 supports USB PD 3.0 and USB Type-C authentication to identify genuine or counterfeit devices. With more than 30 years of experience in the manufacture of secure microcontrollers (MCUs), Renesas Electronics has highly tamper-proof technology and information management technology to prevent security attacks against MCUs. Renesas Electronics has applied these technologies to the R9J02G012.

(2) Implement USB PD 3.0 and USB Type-C certification standards in a compact single package, reducing on-board installation area to less than 50% of existing Renesas devices

The R9J02G012 supports both USB PD 3.0 and USB Type-C certification standards in a single package, whereas previously each required a separate chip. It comes in an easy-to-install QFN package and a more compact BGA package, reducing the installation area for wiring or electronics. The installation area of the circuit board is less than 50% of the area required by Renesas R9A02G011.

(3) Support PD firmware upgrade (PDFU) in USB PD 3.0 specification

The R9J02G012 also supports the Power Delivery Firmware Upgrade (PDFU) specification 1.0. This selective PD feature is an open standard for device firmware upgrades via a USB Type-C cable.
