STMicroelectronics introduces a miniature 9-axis inertial sensor module with a built-in 32-bit processor

     STMicroelectronics introduces the INCO-M1 intelligent multi-sensor module capable of detecting 9 degrees of freedom with a built-in 32-bit processor. The new product integrates complex motion sensors, magnetic motion sensors, powerful processing capabilities and dedicated software in a single micro-module to bring extraordinary real-world experiences to gaming, human-machine interfaces, robotics, portable navigators and patient monitors.

     The INEMO-M1 board level system detects and processes linear acceleration, angular velocity, Earth gravity, and heading, allowing users to accurately detect three-dimensional orientation, position, and motion. By embedding dedicated sensor fusion software in the 32-bit processor, the sensor module can further improve the detection accuracy. The software integrates output data from all sensors and automatically corrects measurement distortions and errors using advanced prediction and filtering algorithms.

     Matteo Lo Presti, Vice president of ST's Industrial and Multi-Market Products Division, said: "The INEMO-M1 integrates nine degrees of freedom detection and motion data processing capabilities in a single module, as well as a dedicated sensor fusion algorithm. The application's flexible total solution will enhance the user experience for a variety of applications, including gaming, augmented reality, image stabilization, advanced navigation, robotics, and body motion reconstruction."

     The INEMO-M1 is the first product in a new ST family of board level systems based on ST's award-winning INEMO intelligent multi-sensor technology. The 13 x 13 x 2mm micro module integrates a 6-axis geomagnetic sensor, a 3-axis gyroscope and a market-leading STM32 ARM-Cortex microcontroller. The iNEMO module offers a variety of communication interfaces, including USB 2.0, CAN, USART, SPI, I2C, and analog-to-digital conversion channels for external inputs, as well as flexible power options.

     The INEMO-M1 module is the core component of the sensor node designed by ST's recently released smart clothing prototype. With inertial body motion reconstruction as the target application, smart clothing prototypes can recognize complex body movements of users and convert them into digital models with extreme accuracy and speed.

    Market research firm IHS iSuppli predicts that the market for 9-axis sensor fusion technology for mobile phones and tablets will exceed $1.3 billion by 2015.
