Samsung unveils its first GDDR7 to unlock the potential of next-generation graphics performance

Samsung Electronics has announced that it has completed the development of its industry's first GDDR7.      Following the development of the GDDR6 16Gb with a speed of 24 gigabits per second (Gbps) in 2022, the GDDR7 16Gb will provide the highest speed of Samsung's video memory to date at 32Gbps. At the same time, innovations in integrated circuit (IC) design and packaging technology have improved performance stability at high speeds.

Bae said: "Samsung's GDDR7 products will help enhance the user experience that requires high performance video memory, such as workstations, personal computers and game consoles, and is expected to expand to artificial intelligence, high performance computing and automotive. The next generation of video memory will be brought to market based on demand, and we want to continue to maintain cutting-edge technology capabilities in this area."

     It is worth mentioning that Samsung GDDR7 can achieve an excellent 1.5 terabytes per second (TBps) bandwidth, 1.4 times the GDDR6 1.1TBps, and each data I/O (input/output) rate of up to 32Gbps. The product uses pulse amplitude modulation (PAM3) signaling to replace the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signaling of previous generations, resulting in significant performance improvements. In the same signal period, the PAM3 signal mode transmits 50% more data than the NRZ signal mode.

     In addition, the GDDR7 has been designed with energy-saving technology suitable for high-speed operation, which is 20% more energy efficient than the GDDR6. For devices that focus on power consumption, such as laptops, Samsung offers a low operating voltage option. In order to minimize the heating of the video memory chip, in addition to the integrated circuit (IC) architecture optimization, Samsung also uses epoxy molding compound (EMC) materials with high thermal conductivity in the packaging materials. These improvements not only significantly reduce thermal resistance by 70% compared to GDDR6, but also help GDDR7 achieve consistent performance at high speeds.
