Semtech supports the future of iot with the next generation LoRa platform
Semtech Corporation announced the introduction of a new generation of LoRa® devices and Radio frequency (RF) technology (LoRa) chipsets that will enable customers to develop more innovative low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) application paradigms. By addressing the diverse needs for cost-effective and reliable sensor-to-cloud connectivity in any type of radio frequency environment, the new capabilities and higher performance of the new LoRa chipset will significantly improve the performance and functionality of Internet of Things (IoT) sensor applications to meet the need for ultra-low power consumption, smaller size and long distance wireless connectivity, and shorten the development cycle of the final product.
The new generation of LoRa RF technology increases Semtech's industry-leading link budget by 20 percent while reducing receiver current (4.5 mA) by 50 percent and offering a high-power +22 dBm option. This will allow lora-based sensors to achieve up to 30 percent longer battery life and to cover sensors placed deep inside and outside. This will create new market opportunities in different verticals by integrating LoRa technology into their applications, including healthcare and medicine, media and advertising, logistics/freight, and asset tracking.
In addition, the new platform comes with a command interface that allows developers to set up the sending and receiving of packets with just 10 lines of code, simplifying RF configuration and shortening development cycles, allowing users to focus on their applications themselves. The new chipset is 45% smaller than the existing product footprint and can be configured flexibly for a wide range of applications using the LoRaWAN global open standard. These chipsets also support FSK modulation to be compatible with traditional protocols and provide a solution to help them move to the LoRaWAN open protocol, allowing them to enjoy all the performance benefits LoRa technology offers.
"LPWAN iot applications are becoming commercially available at scale, moving from testing to large-scale deployment in smart cities, smart buildings, healthcare, logistics and agriculture," said Marc Pegulu, vice president and general manager of Semtech's Wireless and Sensing Products group. "With Semtech's focus on driving innovation in last-mile connectivity, LoRa technology is supporting a growing number of iot applications and solidifying LoRa's position as the de facto platform for LPWAN."
