The Bourns CSM2F series with additional detection pins are used for a variety of current management applications
The Bourns CSM2F model extends the current detection resistor family and comes in four different package specifications including 6918, 7036, 8518 and 8536. Current detection resistors are becoming increasingly popular due to their high measurement accuracy and low cost relative to other technologies. The product family complements Bourns' other circuit regulating elements, such as power inductors and rectifier diodes.
These models come with two or three tinned copper pins. Two pins are riveted to the voltage test point of the shunt resistor to measure the voltage drop across the resistive element, which is proportional to the current flowing through the resistor. An optional third pin is connected to the grounding end of the circuit. For a two-pin design, the current used by the sensor device flowing through the grounding side pin can cause a voltage drop between the PCB connection and the resistor, resulting in a detection error. The three-pin design reduces detection errors by carrying ground current in a separate path from the detection circuit.
The CSM2F series offers resistance values from 25 µΩ to 200 µΩ, permanent power ratings up to 50 W, continuous current ratings up to 1,414 A, and the ability to handle high pulse power ratings. Their metal alloy current detection elements achieve thermoelectric motive force (EMF) as low as 0.25 μV/K and low resistance temperature coefficient (TCR) of 50 PPM/°C in the temperature range of +20°C to +60°C.
