The Nexperia dual-channel 500 mA RET enables high-power load switching in space-constrained applications
Nexperia announced the new 500 mA dual-channel Built-in resistance transistor (RET) family, all in the ultra-compact DFN2020(D)-6 package. The new family of devices is suitable for load switches in wearables and smartphones, and can also be used in digital circuits with higher power requirements. Examples include space-constrained computing, communications, industrial and automotive applications. It is worth noting that the RET in DFN package features a dual space saving scheme that doubles space utilization.
First, by cleverly integrating bipolar transistors (BJTS) and resistors into a single package, a lot of board space can be saved. In addition, the pin-free DFN package itself is more space-efficient. This strategy of effective integration and packaging highlights Nexperia's efforts to meet the compact space requirements of contemporary electronic devices.
To reduce the number of components and simplify board design, 12 new RETs combine dual-channel BJTS with bias resistors in the same package. A second integrated resistor is also parallelled along the base-emitter path to create a divider for setting the base voltage. This results in finer tuning and better turn-off characteristics. Because these internal resistors have a higher tolerance than the external resistors, RET is suitable for switching applications where the transistor operates in the on or off state and helps overcome the temperature dependence of standard BJT. In addition, costs associated with the patch and manual handling can be reduced.
This family of RET devices offers dual NPN/NPN, NPN/PNP, and PNP/PNP options. Unlike competing devices, the Nexperia RET's miniature DFN2020(D)-6 package is only 2 mm x 2 mm x 0.65 mm and is able to fully deliver its specified 500 mA output current. The package is specifically designed to achieve excellent thermal performance in high power applications, providing up to 1 W of total output power at collector-emitter volttimes of up to 50 V (VCEO, open base).
The Nexperia RET device is available in standard and vehicle grade (AEC-Q101 compliant) versions. The portfolio contains more than 400 products, including single - and dual-channel RETs and an extensive portfolio of resistors. The Nexperia RET series is available in DFN and pin SMD packages to meet the diverse needs of a wide range of applications.
