An ultraviolet light sensor from Vishay Intertechnolog. The VEML6070 is an advanced CMOS ultraviolet (UV) light sensor with I2C protocol interface and high dynamic detection accuracy. By integrating signal conditioning ics, photodiodes, amplifiers, and analog/digital circuits in a single chip, the VEML6070 provides outstanding measurement capabilities in a small package size of 2.35 x 1.8 x 1.0mm, making it ideal for handheld devices, wearables, and health monitoring and fitness devices.

     The Vishay VEML6070 UV sensor contains an 8-bit command register that can be written via the I2C bus. All operations can be controlled through this command register, and its simple command structure allows engineers to easily program operational Settings and latch optical data from the sensor. The sensor has a 16-bit resolution that converts photovoltaic UV sensitivity into digital data, while its active response allows for ultraviolet index (UVI) alarm signals based on programmable thresholds.

     The VEML6070 sensor operates from 2.7V to 5.5V with typical current ratings of 250 µA(power mode) and 1 µA(standby mode). The sensor detects the entire spectrum of UVA and UVB bands (280-400 nm) and has a typical power density of 5 µW/cm2/step and a maximum detection capability of 328 mW/cm2. The device complies with RoHS directive 2002/95/EC, is halogen-free and compatible with lead-free welding processes, making it ideal for a wide range of mobile, lighting and sensor applications, including smartphones, digital cameras, industrial equipment and displays.
