Ams OSram presents a new generation of color lasers
AMS, the world's leading provider of optical solutions, announced the introduction of improved blue and green lasers based on its new generation diode emitter chip - improved PLT3 and PLT5. Its superior chip performance is designed to help manufacturers in level and scanning applications increase the performance and value of laser modules and laser equipment. The new laser reduces power consumption, emits a more uniform beam, and achieves more efficient coupling to the fiber.
The improved PLT3 products are packaged in TO38 Metal Can® and the PLT5 products are packaged in TO56. The optical power output of the blue laser is 100 MW, and the optical power output of the green laser is in the range of 10mW to 50mW. The new PLT3 and PLT5 versions continue to use the optical power output, wavelength selection and beam shape of the previous generation products, but improve the beam quality and narrow the distribution of key specification parameters in the actual output.

The improved beam quality of the new AMS chip helps laser module manufacturers achieve higher coupling efficiency when coupling light to waveguides or fibers, and more flexible requirements for laser source output power specifications. In addition, the new PLT3 and PLT5 lasers emit a more uniform beam, improving the laser module's ability to uniformly illuminate surfaces or objects.
Ams OSram has improved diode manufacturing technology to narrow the distribution of key specification parameters in actual output. Enables laser module manufacturers to more easily meet required tolerances in the drive circuit. In addition, the new laser reduces the maximum operating current, operating voltage and threshold current. For example, the maximum threshold current of the 30mW green laser PLT5 518FB_P is reduced from 60mA in the previous generation of PLT5 products to 45mA in the latest version, a reduction of about 25%.
The new diode has smaller tolerances and lower operating currents, which means that the laser power consumption can be further reduced. The use of new PLT laser diodes reduces the need for space and power consumption, especially for battery-powered portable devices, which is a very important advantage. A typical application that will benefit from the new AMS OSram chip is green laser barcode scanning. For large warehouses or open storage places, the use of traditional red laser scanners can encounter various problems because it is difficult to see red dots at long distances or in bright daylight. The human eye is more sensitive to green light than red light. This means that green lasers are less affected by ambient light interference and, as a result, are becoming increasingly popular in laser level and scanning applications.
